MassMutual and artificial intelligence systems

MassMutual supports the responsible use of data and artificial intelligence systems (AIS)

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is committed to developing innovative solutions that meet consumers' needs and deliver business value by leveraging data and technology responsibly. We may augment data you provide with data from external sources to enhance our business processes and fraud detection capabilities.

Principles of responsibility

We consistently apply five key guiding principles when acquiring, developing, implementing, or using externally sourced data, data models, algorithms, and AI systems (Collectively “AIS” or“AI Systems”). We believe these principles are foundational to the responsible use of AIS:

  • Fairness: We use our AI Systems in a manner that treats everyone fairly and aligns with insurance laws and regulations, as well as laws relating to fair trade practices.
  • Transparency: We inform consumers when AI Systems are being used in insurance practices that may impact them and provide a mechanism through which consumers may act regarding decisions based on such factors.
  • Accountability: For each phase of the AI System life cycle, MassMutual has clearly assigned roles and responsibilities to ensure proper functioning, adherence to our guiding principles, and compliance with policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Auditability and Governance: Appropriate governance processes and model reviews are performed in a risk-prioritized manner to ensure that AI Systems satisfy regulatory requirements and perform to our standards, from research to decommission.
  • Reliability and Robustness: Our AI Systems meet defined performance standards to ensure they function safely and properly.

How we use AIS

We use AIS to enhance our business practices and operations, including:

  • Fraud Detection
  • Underwriting
  • Marketing

For example, MassMutual uses AIS as part of a process that involves human underwriters to determine if a life insurance applicant is eligible for our accelerated underwriting program based on information you supply, data from external sources, and our proprietary data models. Qualifying applicants receive offers more quickly, without the need for a medical exam or lab results. We still may require applicants to answer questions about their health.
