Discovering Justice

Turning today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders is what the mock trial program from Discovering Justice is looking to achieve. The program partners with the Springfield public school system to provide middle school students an opportunity to explore the judicial system, analyze a legal case, and argue a case.

Not just for students but also for MassMutual volunteers of the Discovering Justice program. The Mock Trial Program for grades 6-8 connects Massachusetts students with the legal community to explore the judicial system, learn case analysis and development, and practice the civil skills needed to convey differing views and engage in our democracy. The semester long program runs weekly after school. The sessions use curriculum prepared by the Discovering Justice staff. Each session covers a different aspect of a civil trial in which student “attorneys” develop confidence, critical thinking and appropriate civil discourse. The semester culminates with the students presenting their case before a real judge and a jury of community members. MassMutual attorney and non-attorney’s volunteer and typically combine their efforts with volunteers from the WNEU Law community.
