MassMutual top-scorer on 2023 Disability Equality Index

July 11th, 2023

Recognized as a “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion”

Springfield, Mass. – For the seventh year in a row, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has been named a Disability Equality Index® (DEI) Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion. The award, given by Disability:IN, honors companies for their commitment to inclusion of people with a disability in the workplace.

The Disability Equality Index® (DEI) is the world’s most comprehensive benchmarking tool for the Fortune 1000 and Am Law 200 to measure disability workplace inclusion against competitors. The DEI was created by the DEI Advisory Committee, a diverse group of business leaders, policy experts and disability advocates. Now in its ninth year, the DEI exists to help businesses make a positive impact on the unemployment/underemployment of people with disabilities.

"We aim to create a workplace where employees from diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences bring their whole, authentic selves to work,” said Jackson Davis, head of diversity, equity and inclusion with MassMutual. “Fostering an inclusive environment for people of all abilities is one of the ways we strengthen our business and deliver on our company’s purpose to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love.”

In 2023, out of 485 participants, 294 companies – including MassMutual -- received a score of 100; 66 companies received a score of 90 and 45 companies received a score of 80. There was a total of 405 top scorers.

The 2023 DEI measured: Culture & Leadership; Enterprise-Wide Access; Employment Practices (Benefits, Recruitment, Employment, Education, Retention & Advancement, Accommodations); Community Engagement; Supplier Diversity; Non-U.S. Operations (Non- Weighted).

The DEI was launched in 2015 by Disability:IN and The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and is acknowledged today as the most robust disability inclusion assessment tool in business.

"These top-scoring companies understand deeply that people with disabilities represent a tremendous source of talent and innovation for their workforce and market share for their brands, and they are trailblazers in our journey towards full disability inclusion in business," said Maria Town, President and CEO of AAPD.

Globally, people with disabilities represent over one billion people. Disability is a natural part of the human experience, and it crosses lines of age, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and religion.
