The Boston Globe Names MassMutual a Top Place to Work for 2022
Magazine honors the best employers across Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., and BOSTON, December 1, 2022 – Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has been named one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts in the 15th annual employee-based survey project from The Boston Globe. The Top Places to Work 2022 rankings were announced at a live event in Boston on November 30. Companies included on the list will be featured in a Globe Magazine supplement on December 4.

Top Places to Work recognizes the most revered workplaces in the state following anonymous voting by their employees. Questions in the survey gauge respondents’ opinions about their employer’s management, direction and progress as well as their satisfaction with their work, pay and benefits and overall workplace dynamics and engagement. MassMutual ranked number nine in the “largest” company category for those businesses with 1,000 or more employees.

“Earning this accolade for the fourth straight year is rewarding for MassMutual, especially as we continue to evolve how we work after a global pandemic,” said Sue Cicco, Head of Human Resources and Employee Experience at MassMutual. “Our presence on this list reflects our efforts to provide a workplace that balances flexibility with in-person connections, evolve our benefit offerings to foster health and well-being, and provide opportunities that nurture professional development – all of which enable our employees to feel included and valued.”

"The pandemic has changed the way we work, and the employers who topped the list understand it goes far beyond the remote vs. in-office debate," said Katie Johnston, the Globe’s Top Places to Work editor. "Workers want flexibility, of course, but they also want more support, more humanity, and a greater sense of purpose."

As part of a continuous examination of its benefit offerings to meet the needs of its employees and respond to a constantly changing external environment, MassMutual made strides to further amplify diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, enhance a wide range of well-being programs, make decisions based on shared principles, and provide other appealing benefits that support employee retention.

Some unique benefits introduced this year include a discounted backup childcare option, a caregiver support benefit, a commuter reimbursement benefit for city campuses, an ability to convert up to five days of unused vacation time into a student loan payment or 529 college savings account contribution, and additional mental health and addiction support. MassMutual continues to embrace change and evolve with its employees.

MassMutual also opened its new Boston campus last fall, an innovative building in the thriving Seaport neighborhood with sweeping views of Boston Harbor and a state-of-the-art environment designed to maximize flexibility and workspace for its employees. The company’s Springfield headquarters also underwent renovations aimed at bringing people together as the company implemented its new hybrid workplace approach, which balances in-person collaboration with personal flexibility to best meet the needs of its employees and customers.

The Top Places to Work ranking was based on confidential survey information collected by Energage (formerly WorkplaceDynamics), an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention, from more than 90,000 individuals at 381 Massachusetts organizations, the most companies ever surveyed in the state. The winners this year displayed common traits including workplace flexibility, tracking progress on efforts to support a diverse workforce, and strong employee engagement programs.
