(Springfield, MA) - Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) announced today that it has appointed Jeffrey J. Backofen as assistant vice president of the company’s U.S. Insurance Group Underwriting Division.
Mr. Backofen will be responsible for leading and managing the eastern region of MassMutual’s life insurance underwriting operations, including life underwriting policies and procedures, and individual risk assessment and selection. He will report to Shelby Hollister, vice president and chief life underwriter for the U.S. Insurance Group.
“Life insurance underwriting is a key component of MassMutual’s insurance operations and a central part of our future success, and we are pleased to have someone of Jeffrey’s caliber on board,” Ms. Hollister said. “His proven leadership skills, strong technical background and depth of experience make Jeffrey a great addition to our team.”
Prior to joining MassMutual, Mr. Backofen spent 26 years at Phoenix Life Insurance Company where he held a variety of underwriting positions, most recently serving as chief underwriter. In addition, Mr. Backofen has earned Fellow designation at the Life Management Institute and is an associate of The Academy of Life Underwriting. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in Physical Education.
